This presentation has two aims: (1) providing information on the updating and validation of a vocabulary learning strategies questionnaire, and (2) exploring a methodological alternative to the Likert Scale in survey research.
Likert scales that specify a bipolar continuum of a few points (e.g., 7 points) have become standard practice in survey research. However, the ordinal nature of the data thus obtained has received ongoing debate in terms of statistical analysis. In particular, using parametric statistics for the analysis of individual items of an ordinal scale is often regarded as wrong practice. With the increasing ease of online research tools such as Qualtrics, Visual Analogue Scales (VAS) with a slide bar between bipolar ends provide continuous data with finer grains than traditional Likert scales, which, as a result, may bring an alternative, if not a solution to the problem.
This presentation introduces the process of updating and validating the Vocabulary Learning Questionnaire (Gu & Hu, 2003; Gu & Johnson, 1996) and compares the VAS version against a Likert scale version. To examine the scalability of subjective judgment and obtain response validity of the VAS version, think-aloud protocols will be presented. To obtain evidence of construct validity and to compare the two versions, results of factor analyses will be introduced. Discussions will next focus both on vocabulary learning strategies in general and on the potential of VAS as an alternative to Likert scales in survey research on language learning strategies.
