Abstract: In this talk, Prof. Gass will present the results of a series of studies on the use of captions, starting by pointing out how captions (as opposed to subtitles) are used in language classrooms and ask the question about the equipotential use of captions across languages. Then she will make some comments about what this means for classroom practice.

题目:Corrective Feedback: What is it,
how do we do it, and does it work?
Abstract: Prof. Gass will investigate the relationship between communication and acquisition and consider specific constructs that mediate the relationship, such as noticing and attention. I will discuss the Interactionist Approach with a particular focus on the role of negotiation of meaning, feedback, and output. In so doing, I will describe (with examples) what is meant by each of these. To understand how these constructs work for individual learners, she will turn to an explanation of the roles of individual characteristics, namely, attention, and noticing.
