We are pleased to announce that the 12th Urban Language Seminar (ULS 12) will take place in Hohhot, China. The Urban Language Seminars are yearly symposia organized by the network on Industrialization, Language Contact and Identity Formation in China and Europe (ILCI). This year ULS 12 will be hosted by Inner Mongolia University and co-organized by the China Centre for Linguistic and Strategic Studies (CCLASS), Nanjing University.
 
The main theme of ULS12 is “Linguistic diversity and Multilingual Speech Community”. The following topics are also covered:
(1) Language use of young generation: language identity during citizenization of peasant-workers; language use of second generation of rural-to-urban immigrants.
(2) Language contact: language contact between standard mandarin Chinese, Chinese dialects, China's ethnic minority languages, and their interaction in speech community.
(3) Linguistic landscape: multilingual landscape in the view of urbanization and internationalization, comparative linguistic landscape studies of different international cities.
(4) Language identity: the influence of social factors on language identity.
(5) New media language in urban settings: internet language, mobile language, comparative studies of asking the way in different cities.
(6) Speech community: speech community of ethnic minorities, language maintenance and revitalization within ethnic minorities, speech community of ethnic minorities in urban-village.
(7) Language economics: minority language resources development in the process of urbanization, urban language service.
(8) Language planning: urban language ecology, construction of urban linguistic harmony.

Registration fee (tentative)
Seminar registration fee: 500 RMB (including meals and tea break)
Excursion: 200 RMB (including lunch, entrance fee and transportation fee)
