FLTRP: What do you think are the differences between “CCTV Cup” and “FLTRP Cup”?
Cherie: The “FLTRP Cup” National English Speaking Contest is divided into 4 phases, making the contest more competitive. A large number of university students all over China take part in the contest. The 89 national final contestants are of good commands in English public speaking and speech delivery.
Additionally, the occasion of the new “FLTRP Cup” is convenient and excellent.
FLTRP: What do you think of the prepared speech topic in the first phase and the impromptu speech topics in the second phase?
Cherie: The prepared speech “____ Is My Top Concern” is free for contestants to show their talents. The topic can be interpreted in a broad way. During the 1st phase of the contest, I notice that the topics chosen by contestants are concerned with international affairs, social problems, personal experience and so on. I get to see different styles of contestants, and their creativities really inspire me.
The impromptu speech is more challenging. Contestants show their wits in this procedure. What I want to stress is that their courage really impresses me while facing the question masters.
FLTRP: What suggestions will you give to our contestants?
Cherie: Firstly, pay attention to the logic of their speeches. It’s healthy to be nervous, but try to avoid being paralleled by nervousness.
Secondly, try to slow down. Think about what you are going to say before speak.
Thirdly, just be yourself! Try to speak as if you are talking to a friend, then, you will deliver your speech in a more natural way.
FLTRP: Compared with American students, what do you think are the characteristics of current Chinese college students in public speaking?
Cherie: I really appreciate Chinese students’ dedication in study. I have taught English as a foreign teacher in China for many years, and witnessed the obvious progress of the overall university students during these years. Their commands of English get better and better, making themselves more competitive. .However, I sincerely suggest that students pay more attention to their social ability and find a balance between study and life.
